Understanding Developmental Trauma

Developmental trauma is not a single event. It is the cumulative impact of chronic stress, relational instability, neglect, attachment disruption, or repeated adversity during formative years. When stress becomes prolonged and inescapable, the developing nervous system adapts for survival — not stability. These adaptations may later appear as emotional reactivity, dissociation, impulsivity, shutdown, anxiety, substance use, perfectionism, or chronic shame. This course examines what happens beneath the behaviour. Grounded in neurobiology, attachment science, and trauma theory, participants will explore: • How chronic childhood stress alters nervous system development • The difference types of trauma • How attachment disruptions shape identity, trust, and relational patterns • Why survival adaptations persist into adulthood • The role of shame, hypervigilance, and emotional numbing • How trauma fragments self-concept and internal coherence Participants will gain a structured understanding of how early adversity influences emotional regulation, cognition, and behavioural readiness across the lifespan. Rather than viewing behaviour as defiance, weakness, or pathology, this course reframes it as adaptation. When we understand the developmental origins of distress, we shift from judgment to informed response. This course is appropriate for professionals, caregivers, mediators, educators, peer support workers and individuals seeking deeper insight into the long-term effects of early stress exposure.
